About Me

My photo
Hello! I'm a writer from central New York who has bipolar disorder. Among other topics, I write about mental illness and writing. I have short stories published in Lynx Eye, Lost Coast Review, The Outrider Review, Sliver of Stone Magazine, The Mondegreen, The Linnet's Wings, Cobalt Review, Breath & Shadow, The Round Up, Postscripts to Darkness, Masque & Spectacle, and several other journals. I have a poem in The Poeming Pigeon, essays about mental illness in The Ram Boutique and Amygdala Literary Magazine, and an essay in Parts Unbound: Narratives of Mental Illness & Health, a book that was published by Lime Hawk Literary Arts Collective. My story "Santa Lucia" was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. I've written three novels entitled Purple Loosestrife, Hoping It Might Be So, and Dark and Bright, all of which are as yet unpublished. I'm working on a memoir about my experiences with bipolar disorder. I have a B.A. in English from SUNY Buffalo and an M.A. in English from SUNY College at Brockport. I hope you enjoy your visit to my blog!

I use Twitter primarily to write TwitFics, which are tiny stories of 140 characters or fewer, in accordance with the length requirements of Twitter.  I find them a lot of fun to write.  My latest TwitFic is called "The Trimmer".  Here it is:

He trimmed his trees with a chainsaw on a very long pole and trimmed his mustache with a razor on a very long stick. Both ways failed.

Among my favorites are "Ray":

We removed the pool cover. A hand reached up from the murky water. We were unafraid; Ray always could hold his breath for a long time.

And "Man":

The pile of dirt at the bottom of the pool looked ordinary until it formed into the shape of a man, climbed out of the water, and ran away.

And finally one more, "Green Eyes":

Lisa, who had brown eyes, always wished she had green eyes.  "I would love it so," she said to Kurt, so Kurt went out and got her a pair.

Surely there will be more to come!

A Limerick

Quantum theorist Niels H. Bohr
Had a taste for raw albacore.
     He combed his coiffure
     With a fine embouchure
Like the Danes in the Denmark of yore.

My Writing Background and Current Writing Endeavors

I'd like to start out this blog by offering a bit of information about my writing background and current writing endeavors.

I've been writing all my life.  I have a bachelor of arts degree in English from the State University of New York at Buffalo in Buffalo, New York, and a master of arts degree in English from the State University of New York College at Brockport in Brockport, New York.  My master's thesis, Weasels and Angels:  Rhetorical and Communicative Strength and Weakness and Selected Women of The Canterbury Tales, was published in 1993 at the State University of New York College at Brockport.  I taught writing for ten years at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York.  My first short story, "Lonesome Tonight", was published in the literary journal Lynx Eye, Volume XII, Nos. 3 and 4, in Fall of 2005.

I have a short story entitled "Honeymoon" coming out in August of 2012 through Musa Publishing in their Erato (GLBT) imprint.  I am currently editing my completed novel Purple Loosestrife and writing an as yet untitled memoir.  I write many short stories and have been submitting them to various publications.  I occasionally write poetry.
